a constant struggle: women’s rights in lebanon

Lebanon is the most diverse country in the Middle East. The two largest religious groups are Christians and Muslims.
Some parts of Beirut are more Christian, while others are more Muslim.
Similarly, some areas of Lebanon, such as the Bekaa Valley and Saida, are more Muslim, while cities such as batuen and Biblos are more Christian.
As for the camps, since most of their residents are Muslims from Syria and Palestine, they are more conservative in dress and women wear headscarves.
During my four weeks in Beirut, I often walked along Armenian Street and I could almost forget that I was in the Middle East.
These streets may be located anywhere in San Francisco, Austin or Naples.
After being hit during 2006 Israel, surrounded by collapsed ancient buildings-
Hezbollah war and gorgeous modern glass building, I walk to the bar at night and watch live music on the street.
I see women in mini dresses, shorts and vests packed with bars every day after work.
After leaving the socially conservative West Bank, I went to Lebanon right away, where it was offensive to drink alcohol, which was hard to find, so it was a bit of a cultural shock.
But still, it\'s refreshing to see this way of life in the Middle East.
More importantly, women seem so free.
However, the first impression may be a bit deceptive.
Although it seems that Lebanese women have been liberated, Lebanon is not a paradise for feminism.
Women in the West and women in the Middle East generally believe that Lebanese women enjoy equal rights.
This assumption contributes to the long-term existence of gender issues in Lebanon.
Lebanese women grew up with the illusion that they had been liberated but did not recognize the serious gender inequalities in the country.
In fact, the situation in Lebanon is only better for women in some ways, depending on where they live, their social and religious background: they can drive, go to school, work, drink more, and have more sexual freedom, especially if they live near Beirut or Beirut because it is a more free place in the country.
The situation in Lebanon is very complicated because of the presence of women in mini-outfits in the media, billboards and music videos.
But this is not the result of liberation, but the result of sexual objectification and gender discrimination.
In fact, the objectification of the female body even appears in advertisements for foods such as fruits and vegetables.
My Lebanese friend at Beirut.
Based in women\'s organizations such as FE-
Men have told me that whenever a gender inequality issue is raised in Lebanon, people become defensive and think it\'s not as bad as Iran or Saudi Arabia, where women can\'t even drive, this makes it more challenging to improve the situation of women in Lebanon, and women lack countries that pass on their nationality to their children and husbands in their basic rights.
Just this week, a member of the Lebanese parliament
At a meeting organized by the Democratic Women\'s gathering in Lebanon, Elie Marouni said that women \"are sometimes accused of rape \"(LDWG)
The extinction of Article 522 of the Lebanese Criminal Code, which allows rapists to avoid prosecution if they marry their victims, was discussed.
Lebanon is a challenging environment for feminists, because even women who want to be more equal will not label themselves as feminists because the word has a negative meaning.
Many people familiar with the matter believe that feminism means-
Men and families against tradition.
Despite the efforts of many brave Lebanese women to change this statement in Lebanon, they still face many discrimination and challenges.
